“Once the travel bug bites there is no known antidote, and I  know that I shall be happily infected until the end of my life”  ―  Michael Palin I woke up in my dorm in Volta Hall to the sounds of Ghana. The sound of wild birds like I have never heard before filled the air, and I felt as if I had woken up in the Amazon or deep in the Congo. After Breakfast we headed for our tour of the campus. Our Assistant Director Dorcas was our tour guide. We hopped in the bus that would become our best friend for the next few weeks. The campus was much more impressive than I thought it would be. It is a massive campus that hosts almost 40,000 students, and is very spread out. The buildings are built in a Colonial   Japanese inspired style. The white buildings are beautifully contrasted against the red Ghanaian soil and green surrounding foliage. After our tour, we met our program director Dr. Rose Walls, a.k.a. Auntie Rose at the International Programmes Office....

POST BY LISA CARMACK: NEW YEAR

Image
This is the New Year (a little late but hey, I’m working with a different time system). Apparently 2014 is the year of condensing the past years accomplishment into short, digestible nuggets that are only a little bit longer than tweets. How social media of us. A impossible as it is to capture the significance of a year, for 2013 I want to put in my two bits. This year has been transformative and unreal in a lot of ways. I learned a lot about myself this year, as vague and pretentious as that sounds. I learned that I’m the type of person that can change my circumstances; for good and for bad. I took a lot of risks. I made some bad decisions. But from the fallout I made my way across the world and found within myself an insatiable student of my environment. I spent Christmas with my Ghana family (some pictured above); the beautiful, silly, tenacious, passionate, and food-crazed Sylvesters. My friend Priscilla (who is my Ghana sister) invited me to stay for a while ...

BLOG POST BY LISA CARMACK: We live together, We learn together

Image
On this episode of Lisa Writes Home , you will read about: Cultural adjustments, stigmas, acclimations and revelations All the pretty, pretty nature! Beach rave! (or just a regular old party on the beach) And so the journey has begun. I’ve sent out group emails, recorded more audio than I can ever synthesize into stories (though that won’t stop me from trying— Transom , where you at?), hiked through the North, braved the bustling and aromatic streets of the Madina Market, visited schools, learned the special snappy handshake (video tutorial to come), experienced my first political protest (the Supreme Court verdict on the questionable election results) and finally started classes. The road is long and it has just begun but I’m relishing in the experience, drinking in each moment and insatiably seeking out the next adventure. I can feel the gravity that this place has on me, it’s a deep aching tug on my heart that feels like meeting an old friend for the first time ...

BLOG POST BY LISA CARMACK: WEEKEND IN WLI TODZI

Image
I promise to post more soon, but until then here are some pictures from my incredible weekend in Wli Todzi. Wli Todzi is in the Volta region about 6 miles up the mountain from the Wli waterfalls. I was here for an eco-tourism project led by my friend Ethan from UC Santa Cruz. Typically people pay 70 Ghana cedis ($35) to be guided up the mountain, eat delicious food and stay in the beautiful village. It was absolutely unforgettable, and quite a work out getting up there!   This article was posted from Lisa's blog. Kindly follow the link for more from Lisa Carmack http://lisawriteshome.tumblr.com/
