Report on Collaborative Research and Mathematical Modelling: Professor Farai Nyabadza's visit to UG

Prof Nyabadza made an exchange visit to the University of Ghana which is one of the many visits that Prof. Farai Nyabadza and Dr. Chisara Ogbogbo have undertaken in recent years under the Stellenbosch University and University of Ghana staff exchange programme.

The exchange visits between Prof. Farai Nyabadza and Dr. Chisara Ogbogbo started in 2013. The research exchange programme is powered by the MOU between Stellenbosch University and University of Ghana, Legon. It is facilitated by the International Programmes office at the University of Ghana and the Centre for Partnerships and Internationalisation, Stellenbosch University.

Dr. Ogbogbo has visited Stellenbosch University twice on the programme and Prof. Nyabadza has also visited University of Ghana twice, the second one being in August 2017. The research collaboration fostered by these visits have yielded academic publications in a peer reviewed journal with another one in the pipeline. We are delighted to share with you one of our publications entitled “Modelling the role of correctional services on gangs: insights through a mathematical model” published on line already by the Royal Society Open Science (http://rsos.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/4/10/170511) done with the involvement of Mr. Josiah Mushanyu, a doctoral student of Prof Nyabadza, at the University of Zimbabwe (having been connected through another exchange programme).

Both academics are Mathematicians.  Prof. Nyabadza is a leading figure in Mathematical  Modelling in the area of Biomathematics and Dr. Ogbogbo in the area of Mathematical Modelling with specialisation in Financial Mathematics. Their research collaboration work has found direction in modelling disease problems, gang menace as it relates to income and poverty etc. The exchange programme at the initial stages played a directional role for Dr. Ogbogbo in her Ph.D research work, as she finished her Ph.D  work while taking advantage of the exchange visits. The department of Mathematics, University of Ghana, Legon has also benefited from the wealth of knowledge of Prof. Nyabadza in research directions.
