AKWAABA, WOEZOR, WELCOME...
Its back to school!!! The start of a new yearand a new semester
. By now, most UG students are done with course registration, are already
settled in their halls/hostels (for those who are resident on campus). The
timetables for most courses are out too so students have a fair idea of how the
semester is going to be like already.
So what has been happening so far….

UG hosts Visiting Students for the 2nd
semester of the 2011/2012 academic year.
At Orientation |
In traditional IPO fashion, airport pick up was provided for
the new batch of visiting students coming to the University of Ghana. This was
followed by a two day orientation where information on course registration,
security and safety issues on campus, Ghanaian culture as well as information
on other relevant issues were provided to
the students.
Students mingling during the Welcome Durbar |
The students were also treated to a wonderful display of
Ghanaian culture at the Welcome Durbar. The staff of the International
Programmes Office and some programme coordinators were all present, dressed in
their beautiful African wear. A Cultural
Troupe was there to treat the students to some indigenous Ghanaian music and
dance. Some of the international students were invited to join the traditional
dancers. It was a joy to behold- a true sight for sore eyes!
And of course the International students gave us some
dazzling performances from their home countries. For example
Ciara gave a beautiful spoken word, about a young lady professing her love for
her ‘Adam’ while Shakiya and Royale captivated the crowd with their
well-choreographed step dance while singing UG’s praise. Next was a group of CIEE students who
entertained the audience to a dance performance accompanied by Ghanaian music. To crown an amazing evening of student
performances, Chief Momen sent us on a journey across Ghana with a poem about
Ghana’s rich tourism industry.

The evening was climaxed with a free-for-all dance with the international students trying their hands at some ‘Azonto’ dance moves. It was a fun filled evening, an opportunity for students and staff to get to know each other and without a doubt; this second semester welcome durbar will forever remain a pleasant stop down memory lane for all international students present.

Preparing for the Classroom
Visiting students have already spent almost 3 weeks at the University of Ghana. The euphoria of being in a new environment is almost over. A warm welcome has been given, new friends have been made, and the immersion into a new culture is already on course. It is now time for lectures to begin in earnest and visiting students are preparing for a new and exciting academic experience at UG. They will be exposed to new teaching and learning styles, have the opportunity to learn and share ideas with their Ghanaian colleagues during group studies, be able to contribute their experiences and knowledge during group assignments amongst others. We at the IPO wish you all a wonderful semester academically and culturally.
